The territory

The South Garda Bike Region territory is characterised by:

  • Morainic hills shaped by glacial activity thousands of years ago
  • Dense network of low-traffic secondary roads, white gravel roads (strade bianche) and gravel tracks
  • Vineyards producing DOC and IGT wines including Bardolino, Custoza and the local Moro dal Castel
  • Agricultural landscape of orchards, fields and farms
  • Lake Garda to the west, visible from multiple points along the routes
  • The Mincio river valley to the south, with the medieval village of Borghetto sul Mincio
  • Proximity to Verona, Mantova, Brescia and Trento

The landscape is well suited to gravel cycling, road cycling and cycle tourism. Terrain is rolling but never extreme. Elevation gains are moderate across all routes.

The Graspo del Moro — name and history

The Graspo del Moro is named after the Moro dal Castel, a historic wine denomination belonging to the Municipality of Castelnuovo del Garda. The wine is produced from Corvina, Oseleta and Rossignola grapes grown in the local vineyards. Production involves drying grapes on racks for 45 days after manual harvest, followed by a minimum of two years in barriques and two years in oak barrels. The first vintage was released in autumn 2024.

The cycling route is named after this wine tradition as a way of connecting cycling with the agricultural heritage of the territory.
